Legal and Other Requirements

TURN-2-US REQUIREMENTS
 
You must

  • Satisfy all Driving Standards Agency requirements
  • Attend an informal interview or seminar
  • Undergo an assessment of your driving ability 

DSA REQUIREMENTS
 
Not everyone can become a driving instructor – you must!!

  • Have held a full UK or Northern Ireland unrestricted Driving Licence for at least 3½/4 years
  • Not have been disqualified even for one day during the last four years
  • Be able to read a vehicle number plate at 90 feet/27.5 metres, with your glasses or contact lenses if you wear them
  • Pass the three part qualifying test

You should:

  • Hold a clean licence, although some penalty points are unlikely to affect your application. Spent penalty points are not counted
  • Not have any current non-motoring convictions, although motoring convictions will also be taken into account
  • Be able to provide a satisfactory CRB check

But

  • Each application will be viewed individually by the DSA. 


Legal requirements
 
It is illegal for anyone to charge money, or the equivalent in goods and services, for driving instruction unless:

  • Their name is on the Register of Approved Driving Instructors or
  • They hold a trainee’s licence to give instruction, issued by the Registrar
