You are here: Home / Courses / Driving instructor training / Course Details

Our training programme is designed to dovetail with the Driving Standards Agency’s three part exam.  You must pass each part before taking the next.  You can take the Part 1 test as many times as you need to, although most people pass first time, and you can have up to three attempts at passing Parts 2 and 3.  Your Tutor won’t let you take a test unless you have a really good chance in passing, which means that you have the very best chance of success.  We’ll do all we can to help make sure you pass!

Because we treat our students as individuals, we might ask you to repeat a section of the course, set you homework, give you extra training material or ask you to practise certain skills.  We do this in your interest, to help you get the most out of your training and give you the highest chance of passing all three parts.

We offer 0% APR* (intrest free credit*) on our Driving Instructor Courses.

How long does it take?

You start the same day as you enrol.  Your course is planned around your ability, everyday commitments and the test dates.  From the time you pass the first part you have up to 2 years to pass part 3.  If you want to, and we feel you are capable, you can begin work as an approved driving instructor in as little as 6 months, subject to test date availability, tutor availability and you passing the tests at the first attempt.

Part 1

We will give you:

  • Ten hours of one to one tuition with your personal tutor
  • Six mock theory tests for home study.
  • Two written assignments for home completion.
  • The necessary Driving Standards Agency recommended reference books/material

And there’s a mock test to ensure you are ready.

The Test

Takes place at a Driving Standards Agency Examination Centre, usually in a major town or city and consists of 100 multiple choice questions on subject including:

· Road Procedure

  • Car Control
  • Basic mechanical knowledge
  • Highway Code
  • Instruction Techniques
  • The subjects are arranged into 4 bands, each with an 80% pass mark.

The overall pass mark for Part 1 is 85%

Part 2 The Training

  • You get 20 hours in-car training
  • Training arranged to suit your learning needs and other commitments
  • Half-day sessions give the best results
  • All training takes place in our dual-controlled cars
  • A mock test conducted by a tutor unfamiliar to you, thereby replicating as close as possible, your real part 2 test.

The Test

A driving and eyesight test conducted by a Driving Standards Agency supervising examiner. The test can be conducted at a test centre local to Turn-2-Us and is approximately 1 hour long.

You are expected to drive in a businesslike disciplined manner along a varied route showing your ability to manoeuvre and control the car safely.

Part 3 Details

You will now have a good knowledge of the subjects any new driver needs to be taught. In preparation for the final test, part 3 is where we teach you how to teach others, and we give you as much support and help with the coursework as we can to maximise your chances of success.

The Training

  • First you have a half day session in a classroom going over subjects an examiner might ask you to teach. The basis of this work is the lesson plans you will have been developing during your part 2 training.
  • 5 days of in-car training to practise classroom theory including extensive role playing by your tutor to prepare you for the many types of pupil you will come across.
  • A total of 40 hours in-car training

Once you have completed this part of the course, you may choose, to get a trainee driving instructor licence. You then have up to 6 months to practise driving instruction before taking your part 3 test; you have 3 attempts within this period.

The test

Takes place in-car and is approximately 1 hour long, split into two stages and consists of two role playing exercises. Your examiner will paint a word picture for you, describing what kind of people he or she will be role playing including what experience he or she has. You then teach the examiner whilst in the car.
